In 1999, Discovery Communications, Inc. in partnership with Science Service created the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge (DCYSC) to enable middle school students to participate in a national science competition. The DCYSC is designed to award students in the 5th through 8th grades for their knowledge of science and their ability to communicate effectively about science.
Students begin involvement in the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge (DCYSC) by competing in their local, regional, and state DCYSC-affiliated science fairs in the spring of each year. Nominees are then encouraged to complete a written entry booklet by the June deadline to compete to become one of 400 semifinalists and ultimately one of the 40 finalists who win an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. in October. As a Discovery Award Winner qualifying from The Greater St. Louis Science Fair we encourage you to attend one of our two Winners Workshops. The workshops are held on Wednesday, May 16, 2007 at the Parkway Northeast Middle School and on Thursday, May 17, 2007 at the Missouri Botanical Garden Commerce Bank Educational Center. For complete details download our Winners Workshop Flyer and Workshop Map in PDF format, and visit the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge on the Internet.
