
SAFETY AND SUPERVISION:
Each K-12 Regional St. Louis Science Fair project MUST be supervised by an adult who will assume primary responsibliity for the safety and any test subjects involved in the experiment. Each project is required to have a completed SAFETY APPROVAL FORM and RESEARCH PLAN/ RISK ASSESSMENT. This form must be signed by the participant, a Science Teacher and Caregiver. If a project is deemed unsafe by the Science Teacher, that decision must be honored.
NUMBER OF PROJECTS
Students may only submit 1 project to The Academy of Science – St. Louis Science Fair.
TEAM & CLASS PROJECTS
A maximum of five (5) students may work together on any one (1) project. Any award funds that are allocated to a team project will be evenly distributed between teammates.
Teachers may submit a class project for grades K-12. Any awards given to classes will be able to be shared by the class.
WORKS CITED/SOURCES/BIBLIOGRAPHY
Each project is required to have at least 3 sources or works cited. No specific format is required. Students may use "My Teacher" or "My Caregiver" as one of their 3 sources.
HUMAN STUDIES
Students with projects involving humans need to include the following in their research plan: (1) What procedures are in place for safeguarding confidentiality? and (2) Describe how you will inform participants about the purpose of the study and what they will be asked to do. Projects involving humans should include a sample of their human consent form with their logbook.
ANIMALS
No animals should be harmed or caused pain. This should be reflected in the safety protocols or the background research.
VIRUSES/COVID-19
Projects will NOT be allowed that handle, test, or sample viruses. If a student is interested in studying viruses, they may instead submit a research paper by studying reliable data from university labs, the CDC, or other scientific entities.
NO GUNS/FIREARMS/PROJECTILE WEAPONS
NO experiments will be allowed using firearms or projectile weapons. No guns or firearms or bow and arrows of any kind. No Nerf guns or Nerf bow and arrows. No slingshots.
NO DRUGS/ALCOHOL
NO experiments will be allowed using firearms. No guns or firearms or bow and arrows of any kind. Experiments using prescription drugs, illegal drugs, or alcohol will NOT be allowed.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Appropriate PPE must be used for any experiments if any kind of splash or particles may come in contact with your eyes. PPE must be defined and noted in the logbook and procedure.
